You Can’t Unsee It

I think the hardest part about becoming more aware is that you don’t get to go backwards.
Once you see a pattern…
You see it everywhere.
At first, it’s exciting.
You start understanding people.
Understanding yourself.
Connecting dots you never noticed before.
You think you’ve found answers.
Then something strange happens.
You stop collecting answers.
You start collecting questions.
Because awareness doesn’t simplify life.
It complicates it.
You realize the argument was never really about the dishes.
The breakup was never really about the text message.
The addiction was never really about the drug.
The promotion was never really about the title.
The money was never really about the money.
Almost nothing is about the thing people say it’s about.
Everything points somewhere deeper.
That’s when life changes.
Not because the world changed.
Because you started seeing through it.
One day you find yourself in a conversation you’ve had a hundred times before.
Except this time…
You hear something you never heard before.
Not what they said.
Why they said it.
The blame wasn’t really blame.
The criticism wasn’t really criticism.
The anger wasn’t really anger.
The silence wasn’t really silence.
Everybody was protecting something.
An ego.
A fear.
A wound.
A story.
And suddenly the conversation isn’t about winning anymore.
It’s about understanding.
That’s when awareness becomes expensive.
Because once you understand the pattern, it’s almost impossible to see people the same way again.
You still hold boundaries.
You still walk away when you need to.
You still protect your peace.
But resentment starts losing its grip.
Not because what happened was okay.
Because you finally understand it wasn’t really about you.
That’s an uncomfortable realization.
Because if it wasn’t about you…
Then maybe a lot of the pain you’ve been carrying never belonged to you in the first place.
The strange part is that once you see the pattern, you can’t pretend you don’t.
You can’t unknow what you know.
You can’t unread the book.
You can’t unhear the lie.
You can’t convince yourself that almost is enough after you’ve realized it never was.
You can’t convince yourself attention is love after you’ve watched people confuse the two over and over again.
You can’t convince yourself another achievement is finally going to answer the question, “Am I enough?” after you’ve watched people who seemingly have everything still ask it.
Awareness is expensive.
Not because it costs money.
Because it costs comfort.
It ruins excuses.
It ruins denial.
It ruins fantasies that no longer survive contact with reality.
Sometimes I miss the simplicity of not seeing so much.
Then I remember what not seeing cost me.
The older I get, the less interested I am in comfort.
I’m interested in truth.
Even when it’s inconvenient.
Even when it asks me to change.
Even when it forces me to let go of a story I was certain was true.
Because truth has never asked me to be comfortable.
It has only asked me to be honest.
Maybe that’s what growth really is.
Not becoming a different person.
Not becoming a better person.
Simply becoming someone who can no longer lie to themselves.
Because once that happens…
There’s no going back.
It doesn’t just change what you see.
It changes who is doing the seeing.
If, that's what you allow.
Survival Tip #11
The truth doesn’t change your life the day you hear it.
It doesn’t change your life the day you understand it.
It doesn’t even change your life the day you agree with it.
It changes your life the day you can no longer ignore it… and choose to do something about it.
So from me to you…
Make the phone call.
Leave the relationship.
Apply for the job.
Start the business.
Take the class.
Go on the trip.

Set the boundary.
Forgive.
Apologize.
Raise your standards.
Or simply choose yourself.
Whatever you’ve been telling yourself you’ll do one day…
Take one step today.
Because awareness without action is just another beautiful idea.
Life changes when you do.
Promise.
