What Are You Really Chasing?

People from every walk of life have sat across from me.
Doctors.
Lawyers.
Business owners.
Military.
Construction workers.
Teachers.
Retirees.
Men with money.
Men without much of it.
Different careers.
Different incomes.
Different childhoods.
Different stories.
And yet...
The longer I watched...
The harder it became to tell them apart.
Not because they wanted the same life.
Because they were searching for many of the same things.
Some were looking for peace.

An hour where nobody needed anything from them.
Some were looking for connection.
Not because they didn't know people.
Because they hadn't felt understood in a long time.
Some were looking for laughter.
The kind where your stomach hurts and, for a little while, life doesn't feel so heavy.
Some were looking to feel desired.
Not because they couldn't find intimacy.
Because they wanted to remember they were still attractive.
Still wanted.
Still alive.
Some were looking for freedom.
A moment without meetings.
Without deadlines.
Without everyone depending on them.
Some were looking for confidence.
Not because they lacked ability.
Because somewhere along the way they stopped believing in themselves.
Some were looking for relief.
Relief from grief.
Relief from loneliness.
Relief from pressure.
Relief from carrying a life that looked successful on the outside but felt exhausting on the inside.
Different people.
Different circumstances.
Different stories.
But underneath it all...
Most people simply wanted to leave feeling a little lighter than they did when they arrived.
And honestly...
Don't we all?
That's when something clicked.
Maybe people aren't really chasing things.
Maybe they're chasing what they believe those things will finally give them.
We think we're chasing money.
Maybe we're chasing security.
We think we're chasing success.

Maybe we're chasing significance.
We think we're chasing attention.
Maybe we're chasing validation.
We think we're chasing love.
Maybe we're chasing the feeling of finally being chosen.
The object changes.
The feeling doesn't.
I don't say that to judge anyone.
Honestly...
I get it.
I've negotiated with myself more times than I'd like to admit.
"If I can just get through this month..."
"If life would just calm down..."
"If I can just figure this one thing out..."
Looking back...
Life was happening while I was busy waiting for it to begin.
Maybe you've done that too.
If you have...
Welcome to the club.
The membership is bigger than any of us realize.
Then one day...
You get there.
You get the job.
The relationship.
The money.
The recognition.
The achievement.
And for a little while...
It feels exactly the way you imagined.
Until it doesn't.
Then your mind quietly whispers...
"Maybe the next thing."
Humans are funny like that.
We move the finish line...
Then act surprised when we're still running.
That's the part that made me curious.
Because people rarely stop chasing after they get what they wanted.
They simply find something new to chase.
Maybe the chase was never about the thing.
I think the chase begins much earlier.
It begins the moment we believe something is missing.
Respect.
Belonging.
Peace.
Worth.
Freedom.
Love.
Safety.
The moment we believe those things exist somewhere outside of us...
The race begins.
And most of us never question it.
We just run.
But here's the question that stopped me in my tracks.
What do I believe this will finally prove?
Will it prove I'm enough?
That I'm lovable?

That I matter?
That I'm successful?
That I'm worthy?
That I'm safe?
Because if you're asking a relationship...
A promotion...
A bank account...
A title...
A person...
Or an achievement...
To answer a question about your worth...
You're asking it to carry a weight it was never designed to carry.
And maybe that's why so many people arrive exactly where they wanted to be...
Only to realize the question came with them.
There's nothing wrong with dreaming.
Dream.
Build.
Create.
Fall in love.
Start the business.
Buy the house.
Travel.
Celebrate your success.
Want more from life.
Do all of it.
Just don't hand those things the job of deciding whether you're enough.
That's your job.
Always has been.
The rest?
It's just a bonus.
Your Challenge
This week...
Pay attention to what you're chasing.
The next time you catch yourself saying,
"If I only had..."
Pause.
Finish the sentence.
I believe that would make me feel...
Then ask yourself one more question.
Is that feeling only available on the other side of this goal... or have I convinced myself that's where it lives?
Don't rush the answer.
Some questions deserve your time.
"Before you chase it... ask yourself why."— Tera Bronx
Survival Tip #13
The chase doesn't begin when you see something you want.
It begins the moment you believe something is missing.
Life doesn't change because you finally catch the next thing.
It changes when you understand why you were chasing it in the first place.
